A Guide to Grape Varieties

Grapes come in many different varieties, all of them coming with unique flavours and characteristics. The varying array of grape varieties is what makes natural wine such a diverse world to get into. Depending on the grapes used, one wine can taste totally different to the next, but you already knew that, didn’t you?

Today, we want to talk about some of our best-selling grape varieties. These are the grapes that our lovely KERB customers seem to enjoy the most, so we wanted to talk about them in a little more detail, in the hope you might learn something about what type of grapes you like!

Natural Wine: Gamay Grapes

Gamay grapes usually make great light, juicy red wines, ideal for chilling to enjoy in the warmer weather. On the nose these wines will give red fruits with a hint of spice in there too. Palate wise these grapes make light to medium-bodied wines, making them easy to drink. Flavours include raspberries, red currants, high acidity and low tannin, making for a smooth, light and fruity wine.

Natural Wine: Pinot Gris Grapes

A versatile grape, Pinot Gris can make a range of wines across white, orange and rose! This versatile grape can produce dry, floral white wines, sweet, yellow and fruity white wines, full-bodied, spiced wines and more! The variation of the wines it can produce makes it such a popular choice, as it can appeal to almost anyone with the results that are possible.

On the nose you can expect floral notes, as well as apples and pears. Expect more citrus fruits on taste, hints of spice and more in this exciting grape.

Natural Wine: Alvarinho Grapes

What’s used in Vinho Verde, or ‘green wine’, Alvarinho grapes make spritzy, fresh wines. Alvahrinho is great at producing fragrant, zingy wines, with flavours including citrus, melon, kiwi, peach and the occasional mineral note. On the nose, expect more fruits including lime and nectarine, with hints of honeysuckle too.

Natural Wine: Muscat Grapes

Muscat grapes are a versatile grape, creating wines that range from dry to sweet. A favourite amongst wine drinkers, this grape has an intense aroma, featuring notes of rose petals, orange blossom and stone fruit. Sweeter wines that use these grapes have amazing tropical flavours, with honey, apricot and tropical fruits in the mix. Dry wines using Muscat grapes also have great floral, citrus based flavours, making for a refreshing grape variety to go for.

Natural Wine: Xarello Grapes

Xarello, pronounced ‘Charelo’, is a Spanish grape, used in fantastic white and orange wines, as well as Cava! Producing crisp, acidic wines, you can expect flavours including citrus fruits and green almonds, with notes of citrus and minerals. Usually used to make delicious dry wines, this is a crowd pleasing grape to go for!

There are, of course, plenty more grapes out there to enjoy. These are just what we seem to sell the most of! If you have any more questions about grape varieties, our lovely staff will be happy to make recommendations whenever you’re next in store!
